Following her Emmy-winning turn in the limited series Baby Reindeer, Jessica Gunning has found a new juicy role: The British actress will play Cass Elliot in My Mama Cass, a new biopic about The Mamas & The Papas singer. My Mama Cass is currently being adapted by writer Emma Forrest, from the memoir written by Elliot’s daughter Owen Elliot-Kugell.
Elliot became a ’60s star as a member of The Mamas & The Papas, and following the folk group’s breakup in 1968, began a solo career that included hits like “Make Your Own Kind of Music,” “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” and “Baby I’m Yours.” Variety reports that My Mama Cass will not be a Mamas & The Papas biopic, and that it will also follow Elliot-Kugell’s efforts to stop the rumor that Elliot died after choking on a ham sandwich. Her official cause of death was a heart attack at the age of 32.
Beyond her acclaimed work in Baby Reindeer, Gunning’s credits include Doctor Who, Law & Order: UK, the 2014 film Pride, and the Prime Video series The Outlaws. No director has been attached, but production company Veritas Entertainment — which also produced the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown — is behind the project.
